Building a basketball court in the prison was an exciting event for the prisoners. In this prison containing about 370 youth and 380 women, inactivity leads to poor health and boredom.
The court was finished and soon the games began. It was so funny watching raw beginners trying to get the hang of the “travel” rule. But soon progress was made. A school in England gave a gift of soccer shirts and the players proudly togged up for each training session.
Visiting groups added spice to the contests as they were usually 6 inches taller than their Khmer opponents but the Khmers made up for it with very flexible rules.
This year the sport had to stop as the cement was breaking up and injury became a real problem. With a donation from Ted and Alice(Canada) we will be able to resurface the court. What a joy it will be to see the teams out on the court, once more learning team skills and have great fun.
