Literacy and Language Skills
Khmer Literacy
A major need for many prisoners is to learn to read and write the Cambodian language. It is so rewarding to see students reading for the first time, their sense of achievement gives them a great lift. In one prison, prisoners in each cell block are taught to be “peer teachers” and the success rate is amazing, over 1000 men studying, achieving and looking to a brighter future. In 2011 PFC will be able to start high school in this prison. In the Women’s prison this style of class is running and results are very encouraging.
English
Picture 2 women, 1 British, 1 American, teaching English to imprisoned youth. As part of the high school PFC has in the prison, English is taught to a year 11 and a year 9 group. In one class there are students from those who need to learn their ABC to students able to speak and read a little. These dedicated ladies spend hours researching and planning so these boys plus 1 girl get the opportunity to re-make their future.
